OPEN SHEDS January 2005
January Meeting Details
When: Saturday, January 15 10am-2pm
Location: Madison City Public Library
Activity: Roc Day
What to Bring: spinning wheels and fiber or any handwork
Meeting Details:
Join us for our annual celebration of Roc day. Roc day was a traditional day of fun for spinners. After the Christmas
holidays, the female spinners went back to work one day before the male workers. Of course the males played practical jokes
by setting fire to the flax and tow while the spinners retaliated by drenching more than just the fires with buckets of water.
Our Roc day celebration may not have the same level of teasing and practical jokes, but we enjoy getting together to celebrate
the New Year with some spinning. We get together to enjoy our craft and share it with the public.
Bring your spinning wheel, drop spindles and fiber or if you are not a spinner bring any handwork.
President's Message:
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. I enjoyed a quiet time with my family, and I am looking forward to
the new year. Our
Fiber Guild year starts with Roc Day (also known as St. Distaff's Day) celebration on January 15th. We will meet at the
Madison Public Library between 9 and 10 am to set up, followed by some quality spinning time from 10 am to 2 pm. The public
has been invited to come and see how the Fiber Guild celebrates Roc Day. Although this is traditionally a spinning event,
bring your weaving, knitting, or crochet to show off, too!
In February, the Guild has planned the workshop "Variations on a Draw" with Paula Vester. The workshop
is for spinners both beginning and experienced. It will be held February 12, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm and costs $50 for members
of the Guild or the Burrit and $60 for non-members. Please register before January 14th. I am really looking forward to
this workshop! Thank you Alison for all of your work to make this happen.
Finally, thank you very much to Crystal Kitchens, who not only invited the Guild to have our holiday potluck at the
Burritt but found supplies I had neglected to bring, tended fires, cleaned coffee pots, and moved furniture to make it all
happen. Thank you, Crystal!
~Beth
Thank You for the Support
Dear Fiberguild Members,
Thank you for your prayers, support, and cards sent to me through the years of Doyle's illness. John, Kim and I appreciate
the flowers sent to Doyle's funeral and the many cards we have received.
~Betty Whitt
Variations on a Draw Deadline
We are holding a spinning workshop on February 12 from 10am to 4:30 pm at the Burritt Museum's Trillium Room. Paula Vester
of the Peachtree Handspinners guild will be providing instruction on drafting techniques, and how fiber type and preparation
can affect the yarn produced. The deadline for signing up is January 14th. Please contact Alison Zajicek (256-232-5231)
to sign up. The cost is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.
If we do not have adequate participation, the class will have to be canceled.
Spinning/Knitting Support Group
The Spinning/Knitting Support Group will meet Monday, January 10, 2005, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Huntsville Public Library
(at intersection of St. Clair and Monroe) in Meeting Room C on the second floor. All are welcome
